we got married!

Us at our wedding!, originally uploaded by Kelly Hirano.

wow, 24 hours ago, we were partying it up at our wedding, and now in three and a half hours, we’ll be on a plane to disneyworld for a few days before sitting on a beach in jamaica.

i’m not sure that i can express into words all of the emotion and happiness that flowed through my body yesterday. everything went absolutely perfectly, aside from me losing emotional containment minutes before the ceremony started, but that’s par for the course, i suppose. it’s an amazing feeling to be surrounded by friends and family cheering for your every move; people that are important to you from various walks of life who want nothing more than for you to be happy. it was an absolutely amazing night.

the other thing that i’ve noticed, and yes, it’s only been 24 hours, is that being married certainly feels different than not being married. i’ve heard people say that they’ve lived with the person they were going to marry, they then got married, and nothing changed. in the short time it’s been for us, the feelings are completely different. there’s a sense of security and future now. not that that wasn’t there before, but it really hits home that we’re going to live our lives together forever. we’re a family. we’re going to have to make tough decisions and those decisions will guide where our lives take us.

clearly, i’m a bit sappy and sleep deprived right now, but i have to say, this marriage thing is pretty awesome.

nervousness? stress? who woulda thought?

She said YES!!!, originally uploaded by Kelly Hirano.

it’s funny how time works. when you do something like, say, get engaged, the wedding seems so far away. “oh, it’s a year away,” i always told myself. “months away.” “weeks away.” “days away?!?!” that’s where we are and not surprisingly, it’s getting a bit stressful.

don’t get me wrong, here. the marriage part (despite what my “friends” say) isn’t what i’m worried about, it’s all of the planning of the event that’s driving us nuts. friends and family are dong a great job of helping, especially last minute things, but there are a lot of those little things.

we will get through it and it will be a great day. oh, yeah, and who sells tri-fold program sheets of paper where the first page opens to the right? we are in a left-to-right reading country where books open to the left. sheesh.

and, btw, that is one of my favorite pictures of bernadette. this was almost exactly a year ago when i surprise-proposed to her in her office. i’ve never seen her smile so big where it seemed like her face was going to explode because it couldn’t contain her happiness. i’m looking forward to seeing that again next weekend. :)

random bacon coupon

Random bacon coupon, originally uploaded by Kelly Hirano.

so everyone knows that i’m a big fan of bacon. it makes everything taste better and is a gateway meat for vegetarians to convert back to herbivores. i was at lucky yesterday and noticed fully cooked bacon packages in the grocery section. and then i noticed this coupon directly above the non-refrigerated display case. seemed pretty random to me, mixing a head of lettuce or a pound of tomatoes with bacon, but then again, there is this blt thing that i didn’t think of before.

i was really, really tempted to buy this, but $4.99 seemed too pricey and the box didn’t show the number of strips i’d get. i am a fan of the floppy bacon, though, so this could be perfect for me. maybe next time i’ll give in.

bowling is fun again!

7 Oct 2008

things are always more fun when you’re doing well. softball is kick ass when i go 5-for-5 and make a few plays in the field. it pretty much sucks when i go oh-fer with some soft grounders to the shortstop and i drop some balls in the infield. likewise, vegas is awesome when it feels impossible for the dice to land on that bad number, and it’s horrible when it lands on that number every other time.

which brings us to bowling. first i’ll give props where deserved: shawn went in this season with a 198 average and our calculations showed he had to average 206 over the three games tonight to get his average up to 200. i can’t remember exactly what he ended up with, but it was something around a 690 series. pretty damn impressive. wait, now this just makes my games seem less good. yeah, pretty much a letdown. i had a 191-221-214 series or some such. i don’t even know what that adds up to, but it’s less than 690.

nevermind, bad story. stupid shawn stealing my thunder in my own post.

this is some good nerd arguing

5 Oct 2008

there are so many religious arguments that happen in computer science circles that sound nerdy (emacs vs vi, perl vs php vs shell vs python vs etc), but then there are sci-fi religious arguments that really take the cake.

i remember in college reading usenet laughing about people arguing about star wars vs star trek. and, of course, who would win between the enterprise and a star destroyer. a quick yahoo! search on “enterprise vs star destroyer” provides many results, but i was brought back to this discussion by a post in gizmodo. i have to admit, i spent about 15 minutes reading the comments about people arguing. while i do believe the enterprise would win, i particularly enjoyed this comment:

Its a trick question. The answer is Gandalf. Gandalf would win.

the fact that i read this and then spent time blogging about it really cements my nerdiness.
